The nation’s sporting heroes gather for the annual gongs at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year
The best British sports stars are celebrated at this year’s Sports Personality of the Year live from the Genting Arena in Birmingham.
This time the shortlist to vote on is only revealed on the night, but it’s a good guess it could include the likes of Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, England football captain Harry Kane, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, swimmer Adam Peaty, sprinter Dina Asher-Smith and Olympic gold skeleton winner Lizzy Yarnold (her second Olympic title to boot!).
The victorious Ryder Cup golfers are likely to be in with a shout for any team honours, and after England’s World Cup semi-final, can anyone beat Gareth Southgate for Coach of the Year?
Last year, four-time Olympic gold champion, track athlete Mo Farah picked up the trophy. ‘I am pretty amazed,’ he said of the win. ‘There are such great people on the shortlist from Anthony Joshua to Lewis Hamilton and Jonnie Peacock.
‘I owe it to the public and people who supported me and voted. I can’t stop staring at it.’
Clare Balding, Gary Lineker and Gabby Logan oversee the awards, which include: The Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Overseas Sports Personality of the Year, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Unsung Hero and the Helen Rollason award for outstanding achievement in the face of adversity.
