If there’s one thing Holby City’s clinical nurse manager Tess Bateman is good at, it’s hiding her emotions in difficult situations. And this week the stoic medic needs all her composure when she’s obliged to deliver the baby of her colleague Fletch. The trouble is, Tess, unknown to his wife Natalie, was once ‘the other woman!’
Although the affair between Tess and Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw) is long over, and Fletch is on the verge of reuniting with his wife and children, it’s still a horrible situation for the kind-hearted nurse.
Clinical Lead Zoe and Fletch don’t want Tess (Suzanne Packer) to deliver the baby, but she just can’t ignore trusting Natalie’s cries for her help. Tess rolls up her sleeves and helps deliver Fletch junior into the world – but as soon as the midwife turns up, she slips away, claiming other patients need her.
But the baby drama doesn’t end there – there are complications and Fletch and Natalie’s baby isn’t breathing… Fortunately Zoe manages to resuscitate him – and Natalie agrees to give her marriage another chance!
Elsewhere this week, there’s a horrifying hostage situation at the ambulance station. The police, army and helicopters descend on the station once it emerges ex-soldier Kenny has snapped and is holding paramedics Big Mac and Iain hostage.
Kenny served with Iain in Afghanistan and wrongly thinks Iain is sleeping with his wife – but the truth is Iain can’t admit he’s responsible for the death of their platoon after a suicide bombing left everyone but them dead.
Iain comes clean to Kenny about the truth about the suicide bomb in Afghanistan, which killed the rest of their platoon. And Big Mac, who’s been accidentally injured, manages to get the medical attention he needs before he bleeds to death from a life-threatening head injury.
