Known as ‘the M25 of the sea’, the English Channel is the busiest shipping lane on the planet.  This series meets the people who keep the maritime traffic on the waterway flowing.

Among the ferry captains, coastguards and Channel swimmers featured in this first episode is Tony, a deep-sea pilot who’s responsible for guiding the world’s largest container carrier
into port.

Nearly four times bigger than the Titanic, this vessel carries so much cargo that a DVD player can be imported from China for the same cost as a first-class stamp.

‘I’ve got half a billion pounds of goods on board,’ he says proudly. ‘So it’s quite
a responsibility!’
