The birth of hip-hop and rap in 1970s New York is the backdrop for this irresistible drama that centres on bookish young student Ezekiel (Justice Smith) and his unrequited love for local girl Mylene (Herizen Guardiola), whose dreams of becoming a disco star are thwarted by her religious father.

Baz Luhrmann, director of movies Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge!, brings his customary pizzazz to proceedings – his first ever TV show – with spot-on fashions (dig those red Pumas) and a soundtrack that will get you dancing in your living room. Look out, too, for Jaden Smith – son of Will – as graffiti artist Dizzee.
