Jessica Raine shines as a military wife in 1960s Middle East…

Jessica Raine is a far cry from Call the Midwife’s prim Jenny Lee in this riveting drama set in 1960s Aden.

She’s a scene-stealing revelation as Alison Laithwaite, the boozy, ballsy and heart-breakingly damaged wife of Lieutenant Ed Laithwaite (Stephen Campbell Moore), part of a unit of royal military policemen fighting to maintain the upper hand in one of the war-torn last bastions of the British Empire.

The opener is a combination of high-octane action, with the men drawn into altercations with local insurgents, and glamour, as their wives – including Jessie Buckley as new arrival Honor Martin – fret, fuss and make their own fun in the sultry heat of the desert.
