Well-heeled couple Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey prepare to lock down their family home in 2022 America for the one night in the year when all crime is legal.
They don’t like to join in the 12 hours of mayhem, but are forced to rethink when they take in a homeless man and then come under siege from a violent mob of murderous yuppies…
It’s a brilliant idea for a thriller and this neat, tense movie makes the most of its premise. The way normal Americans prepare for the day is chilling and all-too plausible, while Hawke and Headey make their characters believable.
The first sequel, The Purge: Anarchy, follows this movie at 10.40pm and the fourth instalment, the prequel The First Purge, is out in cinemas from 4 July.
