There’s more stunningly ferocious combat in store in this sequel to the brutally exciting 2011 action thriller in which Iko Uwais’ rookie Jakarta cop emerged bloody but unbowed from a tenement packed with thugs and killers.

Picking up where that film left off, Uwais goes undercover in a prison to get in with a crime boss’s banged-up son. After an epic fight in which he saves the underworld heir’s life, he insinuates his way into the heart of the family’s organisation.

Welsh-born director Gareth Evans choreographs the eye-gougingly savage action with skill – not for nothing does one of the hero’s most lethal adversaries go by the name Hammer Girl – and the result is another bout of electrifying mayhem.
