The Trans Women Athlete Dispute – BBC1

Former tennis champion Martina Navratilova digs deeper into a controversial debate in BBC1’s The Trans Women Athlete Dispute

Tennis star Martina Navratilova faced huge criticism earlier this year for saying that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sporting events was ‘insane and cheating’.

Although she later apologised, her comments made headlines.

Now Martina (pictured above with trans golfer Alison Perkins), a long-standing gay-rights campaigner, is exploring the controversial debate around transgender athletes for BBC1 documentary The Trans Women Athlete Dispute.

She talks to Joanna Harper, a trans runner and medical physicist, who explains how her run times dropped by more than 10 per cent following her transition, and learns more about sports science research into transgender athletes from Dr Gemma Whitcomb and Dr Emma O’Donnell from Loughborough University.

Martina’s intriguing investigation uncovers some surprising stories and challenges for the future…
