This beautiful-looking cartoon tells a fictionalised account of 20th-century aircraft engineer Jiro Horikoshi (voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the designer of the World War Two Zero fighter plane that devastated Pearl Harbor.

The last film from retired director Hayao Miyazaki, of My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away fame, it is a tender, whimsical movie that brims with warmth and humour despite its tragic story.

The film soars in its dream sequences featuring pioneering Italian aeroplane designer Giovanni Caproni (Stanley Tucci) and with Horikoshi’s tender romance with his tuberculosis sufferer wife (Emily Blunt).
