This superior standalone adventure sees Hugh Jackman back as the X-Men mutant James Logan, aka razor-clawed superhero Wolverine.
Decades after surviving the 1945 nuclear bombing of Nagasaki as an American PoW, Logan returns to Japan to meet a billionaire industrialist whose life he saved back then – but ends up fending off hordes of Yakuza gangsters and ninja warriors while on the run with the man’s granddaughter (Tao Okamoto).
With one standout sequence taking place atop a hurtling bullet train, the action scenes are terrific, though things do become overly protracted when our hero takes on a giant robot.
However, as always Jackman is on fighting-fit form and Okamoto and Rila Fukushima, as an ice-cool killer, are captivating foils for him. Make sure you stick around until the end for the end credits teaser.
