Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar return as DCI Cassie Stuart and DI ‘Sunny’ Khan in a third series of Unforgotten.

When human remains are found on the central reservation of the M1 motorway, Cassie and Sunny are called to investigate.

The body is soon identified as Hayley Reid, a 16-year-old who vanished on New Year’s Eve
in 1999.

Meanwhile, across the UK, we meet four childhood friends: local GP Dr Tim Finch (Alex Jennings), TV presenter James Hollis (Kevin McNally), struggling salesman Pete Carr (Neil Morrissey) and artist
Chris Lowe (James Fleet).

‘These four suspects have this amazing friendship, which will leave viewers wondering if they’re all involved or just one,’ says Nicola. ‘What’s clear is they seem to adore each other.’

‘It turns out this is a high-profile case that attracted mass media coverage 18 years ago and the village where it happened never really recovered. Cassie has to learn how to handle the media, so she’s given a media consultant. I loved filming those scenes.’ Nicola tells TV Times.

‘It’d be a mistake to think that they’re the only suspects, though,’ adds Sanjeev, ‘Yes, they’re the key people of interest, but there are at least four others it could be. Even reading the scripts I was thinking, ‘It’s him! It’s her! It’s all of them!’

‘This series explores how, these days, social media gets involved in criminal cases – how people comment on everything
and dive in with their own theories on what happened,’ explains Sanjeev.

Will the six-part series of Unforgotten keep us all guessing?
