When it’s discovered that Zara is reading Jane Austen, Al is disappointed but Mrs Tembe is thrilled – she’s a massive Austen fan. Zara tells Mrs Tembe about an Austen exhibition due to come to Letherbridge, implying they should go, and as they tease Al for not knowing his Austen, he agrees to go along too! Later, Zara suggests the staff should do an Austen read-athon for charity and Mrs Tembe thinks it’s a wonderful idea!

Meanwhile, social worker Fleur tells Mandy there’s going to be a hearing as to whether Jess should be taken away from her mother and she’d like Mandy to help with the evaluation. Chris realises Mandy’s feeling too close to this case and offers to step in as Jess’s nurse but, later, Jess calls Mandy, begging her to be her nurse again – with her help maybe she could stay with her mum? Later, Mandy tells Fleur she hopes to help Jess and Vanessa so that they’re in a better position by the time of the hearing. Fleur then reveals the hearing has been brought forward to Friday.

Also, Jas is furious when she’s locked out of the house in only her nightclothes. To make things worse, she’s joined by a pompous neighbour, who’s having some domestic problems of his own.
