Tom Chambers has claimed he wasn’t posh enough to land a part in Downton Abbey.

The former Holby City star and Strictly Come Dancing winner told The Sun he had auditioned to be widowed Lady Mary Crawley’s (Michelle Dockery) love interest but was turned down because of his lack of upper class credentials.

He said: “I was told I didn’t have enough blue blood in me to join the series. It was disappointing but you have to be thick-skinned when things don’t come your way.”

Tom is now starring in BBC drama Father Brown and said: “If I had got the job, I wouldn’t have been able to do this, so it wasn’t so bad in the end. I’m delighted to be joining such an exciting series.”

Joining the Downton cast for the upcoming fourth series will be ex-EastEnder Nigel Harman and Emilia Fox’s mum Joanna David.

Downton Abbey will be back on screens with series four in September.
