If ex-Hollyoaks star Emmett J Scanlan had his way, his bad boy character Brendan Brady would have been killed-off!

Ex-Hollyoaks star Emmett J Scanlan has revealed he wanted his character Brendan Brady killed-off when he quit the Channel 4 soap back in 2013.

In an interview with Irish Times about his career, Emmett discusses his decision to leave Hollyoaks after playing village bad boy Brendan for three years:

“There’s only so long you can stay there and then you run the risk of running the same storylines with different characters,” says Emmett who is now married to his Hollyoaks co-star Claire Cooper who played Jacqui McQueen. “You can also get too comfortable and I needed to feel the fear again. The producers were very accommodating of it. I tried to pitch my death but they weren’t having any of it.”

Instead, Brendan was banged-up behind bars after a shock railway track showdown with killer copper Simon Walker and a tearful goodbye to his fella Ste Hay. Sob!

But it’s unlikely we’ll see Brendan released from prison and back in Hollyoaks Village anytime soon as Emmett is super-busy. Following on from his role as Josh Mason in the Netflix drama, Safe, Emmett will next be seen alongside Anna Friel in the ITV three-part series, Butterfly. They play the parents of a transgender boy called Max who wants to live his life as a girl.

Polly Hill, head of ITV Drama said about the series: “Butterfly is a beautiful story about a young boy on the cusp of puberty who doesn’t feel comfortable in his own body,” explains Polly Hill, head of ITV Drama. “It’s a heart-warming and emotional script from Tony Marchant that focuses upon gender identity and one boy’s search to be recognised for who he really is.”

Butterfly will be shown on ITV later this year.
