Hollyoaks star Charlie Clapham says he would’ve been terrified if he’d known what his character, Freddie Roscoe, was going to go through when he started on the Channel 4 soap in 2013.
Charlie is nominated for Best Newcomer at the British Soap Awards and told What’s on TV: “If someone had told me everything that had happened in the last year, I woud have been just like… I would’ve been scared! He’s got married, been stabbed, got kidnapped, he’s buried someone…big, big things!”
Charlie is optimistic about the chances of Hollyoaks and himself adding trophies to the five soap awards they won last year.
He said: “Last year I saw Joe Thompson [Dr Browning] pick the award up and that’s when you think ‘Oh, this show doesn’t get the 8-9 million viewers that some of the other shows do, but we are certainly capable of picking up these kinds of awards’. Claire Cooper won Best Actress as well, so we [the Roscoes] were sitting there last year, and I say it every time, we were like footballers who’ve just joined the team, watching them lift the cup.
“We hadn’t been on screen at all, I think I’d been there two weeks so you think, why am I sat here kind of thing. We had to go because we were part of the show, it was just everyone else was like, ‘Did you win a golden ticket in a cream egg or something?!’
