Hollyoaks is to broadcast a disaster storyline later this year, its new producer has revealed.

Paul Marquess, who is overseeing the departures of 16 characters, said “something terrible” is going to happen to the village.

Asked if a major disaster would take place, he said: “There is going to be something later in the year. It’s not what people expect – we’re not going to kill 15 characters in one go.”

He went on: “After the [Hollyoaks] Later, something terrible happens to Hollyoaks Village but that will be as much about the storytelling as the disaster itself.

“To be absolutely frank, I’m storylining that today so quite how it will pan out I’m not sure but it’s not what people expect.”

Famous soap disasters include Emmerdale’s plane crash in 1993 and a pub fire in Hollyoaks in 1996, which saw five characters die.
