Hollyoaks is to screen a suicide plot when one of its teen characters, Newt, attempts to take his own life.

Schizophrenic Newt, played by Nico Mirallegro, will make a suicide pact with new female friend Rae (Alice Barlow).

The storyline, which kicks off on October 5, will see Newt alone and hungry on the streets, tormented by the return of his alter ego Eli (Marc Silcock).

With Eli trying to convince Newt he’s responsible for Gaz’s (Joel Goonan) injuries, Newt will take solace from a young homeless Rae.

But when he attacks Rae while under the control of a jealous Eli, the pair come to the conclusion that death is the only way to banish him for ever.

Agreeing on a pact, the pals climb to the top of a warehouse and prepare to throw themselves off.

Speaking of the decision to revisit the issue of mental illness, Hollyoaks series producer Lucy Allan said: “There was a great story pitched for Newt.

“There was also the literal reality that schizophrenia does return as drugs become less successful or patients stop taking drugs. If you’re going to play a mental health issue you have to be true to the illness.”
