Sharon and Dennis, Scott and Charlene, Kat and Alfie or John Paul and Craig… Find out who was voted the most popular soap couple of all time!

We compiled a list of the top 50 soap love affairs and asked users who they thought deserved to be crowned their favourite romantic pair from the soap archives.

With a big majority Hollyoaks‘ golden gay couple John Paul McQueen and Craig Dean stormed to victory.

EastEnders‘ brother/sister lovers Sharon Watts and Dennis Rickman were voted in at number two. Third place was a straight tie between 80s popstars Kylie and Jason, also known as Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell from Neighbours, and fiery EastEnders’ Kat Slater and Alfie Moon.

Another gay couple turned out to be a surprise hit with soap fans: Hollyoaks’ Kieron Hobbs and a second nomination for John Paul McQueen were voted in at number four – despite not being mentioned in the top 50 shortlist!

Coronation Street‘s doomed lovers, Carla and Liam were forced to share fifth place with EastEnders’ veterans Dot and Jim Branning.

The winning storyline saw John Paul falling for his ‘straight’ best friend Craig. Despite insisting that he was not gay, Craig gradually fell in love with John Paul but kept their romance a secret from his friends, family and his girlfriend Sarah. The couple were outed at Craig and Sarah’s engagement party and eventually found happiness together in Dublin.
