The actor, who has appeared regularly on the Channel 4 quiz as a guest in the Dictionary Corner, was tipped for the job after current host Des O’Connor announced he was quitting the show in July.
Speaking on ITV’s This Morning programme on Monday, Christopher revealed that his long-standing pantomime appearances could potentially cause problems.
He said: “I’d love to do it. They are talking to me but the problem is they are going to be filming while I’m doing pantomime in Southampton. I’m playing Buttons in Cinderella. So there’s a whole process going on.”
According to reports in The Mirror, actor Alexander Armstrong, 38, is also in the running for the job but Rory Bremner has turned it down.
Producers are also hunting for a new face to fill Carol Vorderman’s role. She quit in July after 26 years following a pay row with bosses.
