Merlin’s Bradley: ‘My inner child is still alive!’

As the new series of the fantasy drama comes to BBC1, Merlin star Bradley James reveals that King Arthur’s Camelot is still under threat…

As the new series begins, how is Arthur coping as King of Camelot?

“As the series begins, it’s three years on and we are a lot closer to the Camelot that Arthur has been trying to achieve. But, having got there, the Kingdom is now under threat. Arthur is still learning in his new role as King. He doesn’t have all the answers and needs help to get the job done.”

Luckily, Arthur has loyal wizard Merlin to help…

“Arthur and Merlin are best friends who go through a lot together, but are always there for each other. Everyone would like a friend like Merlin – we’d all like someone in our lives we could depend on that much.”

Have you filmed in any memorable locations for this series?

“On what was possibly the hottest day of the year, we shot what was supposed to be a frozen landscape. We were all roasting and they were asking: ‘Could you shiver more?’ On any other day of the year there would be no acting required!”

Do you enjoy doing your own stunts?

“It is a great part of the job. When I was a kid if you’d told me I’d be doing this for my job I would have been jumping up and down with excitement. It is a lot of fun. My inner child has never really left me. People who know me best know he’s still very present in my life.”

Merlin 5 premieres on Saturday, October 6 at 7.45pm on BBC1.
