The 62nd London Film Festival reaches its climax with the Closing Night Gala of Stan & Ollie. Director Jon S Baird and screenwriter Jeff Pope’s touchingly funny biopic of cinema’s most beloved comedy duo gives us two double acts for the price of one. Steve Coogan and John C Reilly are the ones donning Laurel and Hardy’s trademark bowler hats and they do a spot-on job of mimicking some of the pair’s celebrated comic routines. The film’s setting, however, is the end of the team’s career, when failing health and old grudges threaten to stymie their variety hall tour of 1953 Britain, so the mood here is very much bittersweet.
Stan & Ollie screens tonight at Cineworld Leicester Square at 7pm, at the Embankment Garden Cinema at 7.45pm, and at the Curzon Mayfair at 8.45pm, and goes on general release from Friday 11th January 2019.
