Happy Death Day | Unhappy returns for Jessica Rothe in a Groundhog Day-style slasher thriller

Happy Death Day Jessica Rothe

Get Up. Live Your Day. Get Killed. Again.

Imagine Groundhog Day remade as a slasher thriller and you have the premise for the cheekily entertaining high-concept horror movie Happy Death Day.

Jessica Rothe plays the film’s luckless heroine, Tree, a sorority mean girl who finds herself reliving the same day over and over again, a birthday that always ends with her meeting her demise at the hands of a killer in a creepy baby mask. Only by discovering the identity of her mysterious assailant, it appears, can she end the cycle and survive.

Like Bill Murray’s cynical TV weatherman, Rothe’s birthday girl is not that likeable at first, and part of the movie’s fun is seeing her become a better person as she goes through her ordeals of being stabbed, brained, drowned and blown up.

Certificate 15. Runtime 96 mins. Director Christopher Landon

Happy Death Day available on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital from Universal Pictures.
