Nina | Zoe Saldana stars in downbeat biopic of jazz icon Nina Simone

Nina Simone Zoe Saldana

Singer. Activist. Survivor. Legend.

Jazz musician and civil rights icon Nina Simone is poorly served by the downbeat biopic Nina. A controversial choice for the part, Zoe Saldana strives to capture Simone’s imperious hauteur and simmering rage, but writer-director Cynthia Mort’s choice to focus on her last decade means that Simone’s difficult behaviour and mental instability makes a bigger impression than her musical genius. David Oyelowo does what he can with his sidekick role as Clifton Henderson: the put upon nurse turned assistant turned manager trying to keep the erratic star on track.

Certificate 15. Running time 91 mins. Director Cynthia Mort

Nina debuts on Sky Cinema Premiere on 25 January. Available on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital from Universal Pictures.
