Will Arnett’s rascally squirrel Surly is back in The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature, a so-so sequel to the 2014 animated comedy adventure. Of course, the first film wasn’t great shakes but it did manage to muster a certain retro charm. This time Surly and his animal friends – including Katherine Heigl’s sobersided squirrel Andie – are out to foil their town’s evil mayor from turning their leafy home into a moneymaking amusement park. The ensuing action is breezy enough but instantly forgettable, though Jackie Chan’s vocal appearance as a bristling Chinatown mouse (‘Don’t call me cute!’) may linger a little.
