The Shape of Water | Guillermo del Toro’s strange but enchanting watery fable

Shape of Water Sally Hawkins

A Fairy Tale for Troubled Times.

Sally Hawkins’ mute cleaning lady falls in love with the strange fish-man being held in a top-secret US government laboratory, circa 1962, in Guillermo del Toro’s deliriously strange but utterly enchanting Oscar-winning movie The Shape of Water. She then plots to free him, with help from workmate Octavia Spencer and neighbour Richard Jenkins. Del Toro throws in splashy creature feature magic, fairy tale wonder, Cold War paranoia and even a musical number, but it’s Hawkins’ guileless innocence and empathy that holds everything together.
