If you only have time to watch one soap next week, make sure it’s Neighbours because, on Monday 3rd September, the show will make history by airing the first ever gay wedding on Australian television as Aaron Brennan and David Tanaka tie the knot… Written by Claire Crick

Ever since same-sex marriage was legalised in Australia back in December 2017, Neighbours fans have been waiting with bated breath to see if Ramsay Street’s ‘Daaron’ would eventually get married.

But while the wait might be over, the couple’s big day hasn’t come without its dramas, the main setback being the fact that Aaron can barely walk thanks to a back injury. But despite the will-they won’t-they cliffhangers, it has been confirmed that they pair will definitely end Monday’s episode as husbands – even though poor Aaron has to arrive at the wedding in a wheelchair!

Speaking about their characters’ nuptials, Matt Wilson, who plays Aaron, said: “We are both ecstatic to be part of this huge moment in Australian television, and it stands alone as the highlight of my career.”

Takaya Honda, who is better known as Ramsay Street’s David, added: “It’s an absolute privilege to be part of what is, and will be, a historic moment in Australian television.”

But as the pair tie the knot and celebrate in style at their reception at The Waterhole, there’s plenty of other drama going on behind the scenes.

Firstly David’s brother Leo almost misses giving his speech after finally giving into temptation with boss Terese Willis as the pair sleep together, while Karl Kennedy comes fact-to-face with his long-lost half sister, who just happens to be the wedding’s eccentric replacement celebrant Jemima Davies-Smythe, played by Australian actress and LGBTQ+ rights activist Magda Szubanski.

Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison recently told Digital Spy: “The wedding was filmed on a pretty cold and miserable Melbourne day, but everyone had the biggest smiles on their faces.”

Neighbours airs these scenes on Monday, September 3 at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
