Home and Away star Luke Mitchell has revealed his character’s cancer storyline was his idea as he didn’t want to leave the door open to return.
The 27-year-old Aussie hunk – who joined the show in 2009 – has already filmed his exit scenes, which will screen in the UK in the coming months.
His alter-ego Romeo, who has only recently been diagnosed with skin cancer, is set to be told the disease is in its final stages.
Luke told Australia’s TV Week magazine: “The storyline was my idea. I pitched it to the writers and I was thrilled they ran with it.
“Part of the reason I wanted to do it was because skin cancer in Australia is such a prevalent thing and it’s really important to be aware of it. I thought it would be an interesting way to go out as it would take everyone by surprise.
“It’s a nice end to that chapter of my life and it’s fitting that Romeo can’t return because it helps me to move forward. Otherwise you might be going, ‘Oh well that door is still open.'”
The Aussie star has already landed a role in a pilot for US TV show The Tomorrow People.
He said: “It is going to be completely different playing an American and working on something with a huge budget, special effects and chase scenes – I’m thrilled.
“It’s a bit like X-Men and my character has the ability to teleport – so that will be a lot of fun to play with. Everything is going really well.”
