Neighbours’ Dieter Brummer avoids conviction

Neighbours star Dieter Brummer has escaped a criminal conviction for his scuffle with security guards at the Logie Awards.

The 35-year-old soap star – who is due to return to Ramsay Street as military man Captain Troy Miller later this year – was arrested outside an after party for the Australian TV awards at Crown Casino in Melbourne on May 2 last year when he was restrained by up to five security guards.

He was originally charged with unlawful assault by kicking and attempting to commit the indictable offence of intentionally causing injury.

But at his latest hearing, a court agreed to place Dieter on a court diversion programme, Australia’s ABC New reports.

Magistrate Jan McLean said: “It is slightly unusual for crimes of this sort of violence to be considered appropriate for a diversion plan.”

But she added the actor was affected by his excessive consumption of alcohol on the night.

Ms McLean said the charges would be withdrawn if the former Home And Away star agreed to make a 500 dollar donation to the Mirabel Foundation, which helps children who are orphaned or abandoned due to parental illicit drug use, and make an apology to his victim.

Dieter – who left court without comment – has until June 25 to comply with the conditions.
