New Tricks star Dennis Waterman may have announced his retirement from the show. But there are still a few new episodes in the old dog yet!
Ex-DI Gerry Standing’s love of a good knees-up is legendary among his UCOS cronies, but in Monday’s episode – the final in the current series – he startles everyone when he uncharacteristically tries to get out of his son-in-law-to-be’s stag do!
Dennis, who has played Gerry in New Tricks since 2003, revealed: “Gerry’s not very keen on Caitlin’s husband-to-be.
“It’s in his policeman’s blood to dislike lawyers. He likes to give Robin a hard time, which is really fun to play!”
Under orders from Caitlin (former Downton Abbey and Emmerdale Amy Nuttall) to keep an eye on her fiance, Gerry reluctantly puts on his best bib and tucker and braces himself for the evening ahead. But mischievous Gerry’s disappointed when the evening turns out to be a tame affair without strippers or even witnessing Robin get tied a lamppost!
However, there is a shock in store for Gerry when he and Robin later have a drunken heart-to-heart and an intoxicated Robin lets slip that Caitlin is pregnant!
Last month Dennis, the last remaining original New Tricks cast member, revealed he plans to quit the show in 2015. Earlier this year he’d said: “I’ve been an actor since I was 11, which is a really long time.”
His agent Derek Webster recently told the Mirror: “Dennis will be filming until the new year, but that will be it.”
Derek added: “Being on the show with new cast members just isn’t quite the same,” and ‘he misses the old crew’.
Dennis is the last remaining member of the original New Tricks line-up, which included James Bolam, Amanda Redman and Alun Armstrong.
Leanne Klein from Wall to Wall – the makers of New Tricks – said: “Viewers won’t be saying goodbye to Dennis until autumn 2015, so there will be plenty of time to enjoy the slightly unorthodox antics of his character Gerry Standing,”
