Another bunch of impossibly buff Greek warriors fend off the invading Persian hordes in 300: Rise of an Empire, a sequel of sorts to 2006’s epic adaptation of cult comic book 300. Second time around, though, the mix of ridiculously pumped-up live-action and eye-popping virtual visuals lacks the wow factor — and Gerard Butler’s beefy roar. This time it’s Sullivan Stapleton’s Athenian general Themistocles who takes to the waves to hold off the mighty Persian fleet. And it’s on board the Persian flagship that the film comes into its own thanks to Eva Green, who brings a deliciously sly camp knowingness and smoky-eyed sensuality to the role of the fleet’s leather-clad commander – and saves this absurdly overladen vessel from sinking.
