“4 Girls, 3 Days, 2 Cities, 1 Chance…”
So runs the tagline for Kidulthood creator Noel Clarke’s self-consciously tricksy caper thriller 220.127.116.11.
Emma Roberts, Tamsin Egerton, Ophelia Lovibond and Shanika Warren-Markland play the four girls – a quartet of sassy college girlfriends who get caught up in the aftermath of a jewel heist after a chance encounter with some thieves on a London street.
The action that follows unfolds over three days and in two cities (London and New York), as the tagline suggests, but writer and co-director Clarke doesn’t do anything so conventional as tell his story in a straightforward chronological order. Instead, he chops back and forth in time while dealing with the girls’ individual adventures – and personal “ishoos”.
If you’re interested, the new Blu-ray edition of the film contains an alternative “Long Weekend Cut” of the film, which re-assembles the film’s narrative in consecutive time. The plotting remains clumsy whichever way it’s ordered, and Clarke’s treatment of his nubile heroines sometimes verges on lad-mag leering, but his ambition and energy are never in doubt.
Released on Blu-ray & DVD on 4th October.
