Alex Jones and Holly Valance have missed out on a place in next weekend’s Strictly Come Dancing final after they were voted out in the semi-final’s double elimination.
The One Show presenter, who had partnered James Jordan in the series, was the first to learn that she would not be competing at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom next Saturday night, while Holly Valance and partner Artem Chigvintsev discovered their fate later on in Sunday night’s results show.
Their departure means that Harry Judd, Chelsee Healey and Jason Donovan will compete in next Saturday’s final in a bid to win the coveted Glitterball trophy.
Alex said afterwards she had had an “incredible time” on the show, and added, “when I’m old and grey I’ll look back at these three months and think ‘that was a brilliant time’.”
She also won praise from James Jordan, who said, “If there was a trophy for most improved dancer you would have won that trophy, and whoever gets to work with you in the future is very very lucky because you’ve been absolutely brilliant to work with.”
Holly, meanwhile, fought back tears as she said, “I’m just proud to have been a part of the most successful Strictly.
“The British public has been incredible,” she added, “this is much further than we ever thought we could imagine.”
Alex and Holly had finished joint last on the judges’ scoreboard on Saturday night after they had performed their two routines.
While Alex won praise for her waltz and the judges loved Holly’s Argentine Tango, their second routines – Alex’s salsa and Holly’s Charleston – received a more mixed response.
Len Goodman said that Alex’s salsa “was full of personality but lost a bit of finesse,” while Craig Revel Horwood said of Holly’s routine, “It was like vegemite – you either loved it or hated it.”
Next weekend’s final will take place at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool and for the first time ever will be broadcast in 3D on BBC One’s HD channel, as well as being screened at selected cinemas across the UK.
It will be the first final for professional Kristina Rihanoff, who is partnering Jason Donovan, while Chelsee Healey’s partner Pasha Kovalev has achieved the feat of making the final in his very first series.
Aliona Vilani, who is partnering Harry Judd, is in the final for the second year running, after she finished second in 2010 as partner to Matt Baker.
