Strictly Come Dancing‘s Anton Du Beke has said sorry on TV for making a racist remark to his partner Laila Rouass.

The 43-year-old admitted on the spin-off show It Takes Two on Friday that he was ‘mortified’ by the outrage that his remark had caused.

The incident occured when du Beke said Rouass looked like a ‘Paki’ after she had a spray tan.

“It was a stupid thing to do,” he admitted.

“Now people are talking about that when they should be talking about the show, great show that it is.”

“As I say, I’m mortified about it completely and Laila has been quite remarkably wonderful.”

Rouass, who also appeared on the show, added, “I’ve just had such a great four weeks. I just don’t want it to end.

“Apart from the dancing he’s taught me how to be gracious and how to laugh at silly things and we’ve just had such a great time and I want it to carry on – it’s just such a shame that this is happened and we want to move on.”

Du Beke’s remarks sparked 487 complaints from viewers – and presenter Bruce Forsyth also angered fans of the show when he said they should “have a sense of humour” over the incident.

We used to have a sense of humour about this. You go back 25, 30, 40 years and there has always been a bit of humour about the whole thing.

“At one time the Americans used to call us limeys, which doesn’t sound very nice, but we used to laugh about it. Everybody has a nickname.”

However the BBC has said that no action will be taken against either du Beke or Forsyth.

“Anton and Bruce have made their apologies and as far as we are concerned the matter is closed,” a spokeswoman said.
