Ashley Walters plays the charming Michael Roberts in BBC One’s adaptation of Small Island. Here he talks about his new role…

Star of Hustle and the forthcoming BBC drama Five Days, Ashley Walters is now turning his hand to period drama with his role as Michael Roberts in BBC One’s new two-part drama Small Island.

Based on the novel by Andrea Levy, it’s set against the backdrop of the World War II and centres on the relationships between Londoners and Jamaicans coming to Britain.

Ashley’s character Michael is a Jamaican serviceman who comes to London and meets Queenie (played by Ruth Wilson) and the two enjoy a brief – but very passionate – affair.

Ashley says of his character: “Michael’s a bit of a charmer who’s determined to find his way in life, which brings him to the UK where he meets a lovely woman, Queenie, and develops a relationship.

“At that time, a black man with a white woman was frowned upon, so it’s their own special thing.”

Small Island screens on Sunday, December 6, at 9pm on BBC1.
