Media watchdog Ofcom has fined the BBC £50,000 for a faked phonecall on Blue Peter last year.

The long-running children’s show was conducting a phone-in competition, but technical problems meant calls were unable to get through to the studio.

So a visiting child was asked by a producer to pose as real competition entrant.

Ofcom criticised the BBC for ‘negligence’ and the Blue Peter editor for not referring the issue to senior managers after the broadcast.

It fined the BBC £45,000 for the first broadcast and £5,000 for a repeat.
