What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Wednesday 17th January

Girlfriends, 9.00pm, ITV

It never rains but it pours for downtrodden Gail. The put-upon and selfless lollipop lady is growing concerned about her mum Edna, who has the early signs of dementia, especially when the staff at Edna’s sheltered housing insist that she would be better off in a care home. Meanwhile, her beloved grandson Ben causes her extra worry when his estranged mum Corinne rocks up and demands to take him out for the day – but can Gail trust her to bring him back? Poor Linda is having an even worse time, though, as the police inquiry into Micky’s death continues – but more surprising information comes to light about the highly-strung Carole… Rating: ****

Kiri, 9.00pm, C4

The four-part drama from the pen of Bafta-winning writer Jack Thorne (National Treasure) is difficult viewing, but it’s certainly powerful stuff. In this second episode, Kiri’s grandfather Tobi (Lucian Msamati, Taboo), finds himself in the spotlight as he hunts for his fugitive son Nate (Paapa Essiedu, recently seen in The Miniaturist) in the hope of getting some answers about what really happened to the little girl. Meanwhile, veteran social worker Miriam (a typically excellent Sarah Lancashire) finds herself scapegoated for the tragedy, and there are hints that something is not quite right in the home of Kiri’s foster parents (Lia Williams and Steven Mackintosh). Rating: ****

Lose Weight for Good, 8.00pm, BBC2

The chef’s mission to help volunteers lose weight and keep it off reaches the halfway stage. For event planner Sandra, avoiding high-calorie sweet treats is the key to her shedding the pounds. Luckily, Tom has a low-calorie coffee and custard chocolate pot for her to try. Vicar Jenny, meanwhile, loves hosting dinner parties, but will an Italian seafood pot fit the bill? Tom also rustles up a beef stroganoff, adding to the list of dishes you’ll want to try, whether you’d like to lose weight or not. Rating: ****
