New series will feature former Doctor Who star Peter Davison
Brenda Blethyn has started filming the ninth series of her hugely popular ITV crime drama series, Vera.
The 72-year-old actress will once again don her dodgy mac and trademark hat to solve four feature length crimes as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope.
Kenny Doughty returns as Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy, Vera’s dependable sidekick, along with Jon Morrison as DC Kenny Lockhart, who’s often the butt of Vera’s jokes. Also back is Ibinabo Jack, who plays Vera’s newest recruit, DC Jacqueline Williams, who transferred from the Fraud Squad in series eight.
Filming has started on the first story, Blind Spot, where Vera investigates the death of a newly qualified HMP forensic pathologist, whose body is found dumped on a landfill site far from home. The detective discovers that the victim had been looking into the crime of a former patient who had recently committed suicide.
The opening episode will feature former Doctor Who star Peter Davison, who is also appearing in the new Suranne Jones drama, Gentleman Jack. The fourth story, called The Seagull, has been adapted from the book by Vera creator Ann Cleeves.
The Seagull sees the cop opening up a cold case when she discovers not one but two skeletons hidden in a culvert near Whitley Bay.
It’s not yet known when the new series of Vera will air.
