Cheryl Cole has gone straight to number one in the UK charts with Fight For This Love, her first single as a solo artist.

The song, which Cole performed on last weekend’s X Factor results show, is the fastest selling single of the year so far, having shifted more than 290,000 copies in its first week on release.

It replaces last year’s X Factor winner Alexandra Burke – who was mentored by Cheryl – at the top of the charts. Her latest single Bad Boys debuted in the top spot last weekend.

The Girls Aloud singer – whose solo album is released on Monday – said that getting to number one had put “a permanent smile on her face”.

“I’m just getting over the fact I have recorded my solo record and now it’s number one,” she added.

“I can’t take this all in. It’s hard for me to put into words how I feel.”

Martin Talbot from the Official Charts Company said, “Many congratulations to Cheryl Cole on her fantastic achievement.

“Other than X Factor winners, very few singles get anywhere near 300,000 sales in their first week.
