The Voice‘s Will.i.am has said he is pleased to see Cheryl Cole focusing on her music once again, calling her stint on The X Factor a ‘waste of talent’.

Speaking to The Sun the rapper – whose acts made their live debut on Saturday’s edition of the BBC1 show – said that he thought the Girls Aloud singer was too good to become ‘just some TV star’.

“Cheryl is a great artist and a great performer and I think the world needs that,” Will said. “And to see that go away for TV only – it’s a waste of talent.”

“Music is what got us here,” he added. “If you’re not singing any more or writing any more songs you’ve abandoned your base. Cheryl Cole to me is not Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton.”

Will also put paid to the rumours that he and Cheryl had had a romantic relationship after she split from her footballer husband Ashley Cole.

“I learned a lot about myself,” he said of their friendship. “I’m glad I went through that, I’m glad she went through that but it was hard.

“At first it would bring my emotions down but now we laugh about them,” Will added. “I appreciate our friendship and I think it’s strong.”

The Black Eyed Peas star also admitted he had a “couple of winners” on his Voice team – which includes Joelle Moses and Jaz Ellington – but stressed that he did not think an artist necessarily needed to win to be successful.

“I think I have singers on my team that are going to be very successful in entertainment, whether or not they win The Voice,” he said.
