BBC1 has announced that Martin Clunes will star in a new series of the classic British sitcom The Fall And Rise of Reginald Perrin.
Reggie Perrin’s creator David Nobbs will collaborate with Simon Nye – the man behind Men Behaving Badly – on six 30-minute episodes due to air later this year.
The Doc Martin star heads up a cast including Cold Feet’s Fay Ripley, The Royal’s Wendy Craig and Game On’s Neil Stuke.
Lucy Lumsden, BBC Controller, Comedy Commissioning, said: “They have come up with an inspired update, rather than a remake, of one of the greatest classic comedies of all time.”
Memorably played by Leonard Rossiter, the original Reggie Perrin tells the story of a man constantly on the verge of a midlife crisis who escapes the monotony of daily life through increasingly surreal flights of fancy. It ran between 1976 and 1979.
Jay Hunt, Controller of BBC One, said: “It feels as fresh and sharp now as it did all those years ago.”
