Corrie boss Iain MacLeod has promised a huge episode in the new year that will focus solely on one character and how the factory collapse has affected them...

Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has revealed the soap will air a special upside next year that is focused solely on Carla Connor.

Iain has already explained how Underworld is set to collapse in dramatic scenes next March, leaving lots of locals without jobs to go to.

Carla is facing a tough 2019 already

But one of the most effected Weatherfield residents will of course be factory boss, Carla Connor, and the fall out from the disaster will have devastating affect on Carla’s mental heath.

Iain confessed that at first the collapse will appear to be an accident, but it soon transpires that there was criminal activity surrounding the tragedy which is set to leave one character dead.

Iain told What’s On TV at a recent Corrie press day: “Our viewers will know the factory roof collapse is a whodunnit quite early on, but our characters won’t. Somebody operating in the shadows has done this.

Carla Connor tells Peter to get evidence to prove that Susie would be better off with Johnny.

Carla’s world is about to come crashing down around her… literally

“Characters will find out about eight weeks after it has happened that someone is responsible. The early stages of the story will see the finger of blame pointed at Carla because the roof collapse seems to emerge from a workaholism story for Carla.”

Iain has revealed that the new year will see Carla throw herself into work after a deep and meaningful conversation with Peter Barlow over Christmas…

“She wants to make the factory Aidan’s legacy and that drives Carla to make some mistakes, Iain admits. “She alienates a lot of people.

FROM ITV STRICT EMBARGO - No use before Tuesday 11th December 2018 Coronation Street - Ep 9653 Monday 31st December 2018 Carla Connor [ALISON KING] warns Peter Barlow [CHRIS GASCOYNE] that the snooker hall is a money pit and challenges him to a game of snooker, suggesting if she wins he pulls out of the sale. Will Peter help Carla through her tough year, or will she alienate him, too?

“This is going to be a massive story and there is a stand alone episode that will be mental health-focused and also Carla-focused. It will also reveal to the audience who was behind the roof collapse as well.

“Carla feels – correctly – that everyone is out to get her, and she spirals into a slightly delusional state which effects her health. We’re doing something a little bit stylised, like with the Ashley storyline I did at Emmerdale, but not quite as extreme.

“This factory storyline has lots of off-shoots into areas that give our amazing cast a chance to show off their acting chops.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
