Revealed: The SIX suspects in the frame for Coronation Street’s factory roof collapse

Who’s your money on?

Coronation Street bosses have revealed that six characters will be in the frame for causing the forthcoming collapse of the Underworld roof, which leads to the death of a much-loved character.

Factory boss Carla Connor – who recently asked Gary Windass to repair the damaged roof on the cheap – is at the centre of the investigation. Gary, Nick Tilsley, Peter Barlow, Robert Preston and Seb Franklin complete the line-up of suspects.

The soap’s producer, Iain MacLeod, outlined his plans for the story last year, revealing that the incident will initially be seen as an accident, but will later emerge to be deliberate.

Says MacLeod: “It’s a whodunnit without a murder at the centre of it all. Instead, it’s gross negligence manslaughter. That doesn’t sound as sexy, but it’ll be every bit as intriguing. What we’re trying to do is start with the crime and then gradually reveal the motives afterwards.”

The dramatic scenes will play out on screen next week, and will follow a protest at the factory by the Underworld machinists, who are angry about Carla’s plans to outsource production. As siblings Sally Metcalfe and Gina Seddon head up to the roof with banners, the pair become embroiled in an argument – during which the roof caves in.

The identity of the unlucky victim is being kept under wraps, but the knicker-stitchers are all in danger, as are residents Gemma and Emma – who join in the protest. The lives of Tyrone, Abi and Tim are also at risk, with the trio arriving on the scene to help the injured, ahead of the emergency services.

MacLeod has also revealed that the storyline will lead to the creation of Coronation Street’s next big villain – the last one being the now late serial killer, Pat Phelan.

Coronation Street continues on ITV.
