Coronation Street’s Katie McGlynn addresses Sinead’s tragic exit: ‘It was like watching someone else die’

Katie's emotional storyline came to an end on Friday night

Sinead Tinker's tragic battle with cervical cancer came to a "heartbreaking" end last night as she finally passed away.

Coronation Street fans were left “sobbing” on Friday night as Sinead – played by Katie McGlynn – sadly lost her battle to cancer and bowed out of the soap after seven years.

And it’s safe to say the episode – which saw Sinead pass away during son Bertie’s bedtime story – caused emotions to run high as even Katie said she didn’t recognise herself taking her final breath on-screen.

Speaking at the Inside Soap Awards earlier this month, Katie said: “It was so sad because we’ve developed the character for six and a half years and I feel like I know her.

It has been a heartbreaking storyline that captured the nation after Sinead initially opted for a holistic treatment for fear chemotherapy would hurt her baby whilst she was pregnant.

The cervical cancer later spread to her liver and lymph nodes and became terminal. Although Katie admitted she “underestimated” how difficult the storyline would be on her own mental health, she hopes it has raised awareness of the importance of cervical smears.

“Watching her die was just awful, but it’s raising awareness and I just hope that we are doing that,” she explained. “I love this storyline because it covers so many issues. I just wanted to highlight the fact people are dying of cancer.

“If you take anything from tonights episode, please…. GO FOR YOUR SMEARS! It could save your life.”
