Cate Blanchett, Joseph Fiennes

Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth the Golden Age, The Virgin Queen, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Orlando, Mary Queen of Scots, The Prince and the Pauper, Jubilee, Young Bess; what do they all have in common?

Well, given the title of my picking today it’s hardly a difficult question. It’s Queen Elizabeth I. She crops up in all of the above and has been played by some unforgettable names ranging from Judi Dench, Jean Simmons and Glenda Jackson to Bette Davis and Quentin Crisp. In today’s movie, Cate Blanchett plays the 16th-century queen.

I’d say Elizabeth has to be the most popular English monarch in film, what do you think?
