This window into the life of an infectiously cheerful young woman, directed by Mike Leigh, is a true inspiration.
Primary school teacher Poppy (Sally Hawkins) lives in London with her best mate. When her bike is stolen she decides to learn to drive. When her instructor turns out to be a bigoted, slightly psychotic grump, she jokes with him and fields his aggression. Whatever happens to her, however negative, she has a wonderful ability to remain upbeat at all times.
I’ve seen this movie a few times now and every time I’m inspired to adopt Poppy’s positive approach to life. However, I find sustaining that a real challenge when surrounded by the impatience, aggression and hostility of today’s busy world.
Happy-Go Lucky is showing on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm
