Since it burst onto screens in 2006, I’ve managed to sidestep this cult Disney phenomenon.
It wasn’t difficult. I don’t have anybody in my life born after 1990. (You under fives don’t count – no doubt you’ll have your own variation of the High School Musical theme in a few years.)
But, now it’s almost four years since that original TV movie caused such a stir, there’ve since been two sequels, there are millions of fans worldwide and there’s a High School Musical 4 due next year. There’s absolutely no doubt that this franchise presses all the right buttons with today’s teens. For this reason, I’ve decided that it’s time for me to find out exactly why youngsters and their families love it so much.
High School Musical is showing on BBC3 tonight at 9pm, and on Saturday at 11.35pm
