Couch Potato’s Tuesday Teaser: Which film director described Citizen Kane as ‘a total bore’?

The Orson Welles film Citizen Kane – the story of a newspaper mogul’s rise and fall – is widely considered one of the best movies of all time. It’s been topping polls for years.

Personally, I don’t get what all the fuss is about. I think this film is rather dull. So, it’s extremely comforting to discover that this highly rated movie has also been on the receiving end of some negative remarks.

One such critic was Swedish director Ingmar Bergman who reportedly said the following in interview:

“Citizen Kane, which I have a copy of – is all the critics’ darling, always at the top of every poll taken, but I think it’s a total bore.”

Anyone else think Citizen Kane is overrated? Discuss this film on our Movie Talk Facebook page or Movie Talk Twitter stream.

Citizen Kane is showing tonight – 3rd May – on BBC4 at 9pm, and is followed by three programmes about Orson Welles.
