Writer Paul Rudnick (who wrote the initial drafts for Sister Act before distancing himself from the film by choosing the pseudonym Joseph Howard) decided to spend time in a convent to do his research for the screenplay for this comedy featuring Whoopi Goldberg and singing nuns.

The convent he visited was the Benedictine Abbey of Regina Laudis in Connecticut, which is presided over by Mother Hart – the only known nun to be a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

So how come she’s a voting member?

Well, she was formerly Hollywood star Dolores Hart, who worked alongside many big names, including Elvis, Montgomery Clift, George Hamilton and Robert Wagner.

Apparently, she and her fellow nuns enjoy watching her Academy screeners every year. Well, who wouldn’t!

Sister Act is showing today – 22nd January – on Film 4  at 6.50pm
