When the producers of The Silence of the Lambs decided to turn Thomas Harris‘s first book Red Dragon into a film in 2002, they couldn’t ignore the opportunity to cash in on Anthony Hopkins and his most infamous role. So, they made much more of the Hannibal Lecter character than Harris’s novel does.
However, the events in Red Dragon take place before The Silence of the Lambs. And, since this film was made 11 years after everyone first got creeped out by Hannibal the Cannibal, this posed a slight problem for the filmmakers.
You see, the 65-year-old Hopkins had acquired a few more lines – as well as a few more pounds – since he first played Lecter.
Luckily, in the world of cinema you can achieve anything. And, thanks to a bit of digital manipulation and a strict diet, the decade of difference is impossible to see.
Or is it? What do you think?
Red Dragon is showing tonight – 26th July – on ITV2 at 11pm
