The Bodyguard is a romantic thriller very much associated with the early 90s (as is its chart-topping soundtrack). But did you know that the film’s concept was originally proposed in the mid-70s? Diana Ross was cast as the lead, and Steve McQueen was offered the title role.
The project was dropped though because the film was considered to be ‘too controversial’. It was picked up again a few years later in the late 70s, with Ryan O’Neal this time cast alongside Ross, but once again the project didn’t come to fruition.
Had it made it to screens in the 70s, what would have featured on the soundtrack I wonder. Certainly not a big powerhouse version of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You I’m sure, although the song was already out there – it was penned in 1973.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros announced plans to remake the movie – updating it for the internet era. Britney Spears and Alexandra Burke are currently rumoured to be in the running for the lead role… What do you make of that?
The Bodyguard is showing tonight – 28th June – on ITV1 at 10.35pm
